Blogger Andrew Trench recently presented a theory on the threshold of when Internet penetration starts to matter, writing:

Social networks have also been given plenty of credit for the revolution unfolding in Egypt.

So I went and had a look at the numbers over on www.internetworldstats.com to see what they could tell us about these two scenarios. Well, fascinatingly, both Egypt and Tunisia have seen a massive growth in internet users and internet penetration over the last 10 years.

Both have now got internet penetration of over 20% and in Tunisia's case it was as high as 34%.

While it is clearly simplistic to over-state this factor and there must be many more drivers contributing to such a rapid political uprising, it is obviously a factor as evidenced by the Egyptian regime pulling the plug on the country's internet access to try and block the rising tide of revolt.

My back-of-napkin theory is this: that a rapid increase in internet penetration in a repressive regime does play an important role as it provides an unfettered channel of communication allowing disaffected citizens to share views - and more importantly - to rapidly organise and mobilise.

If Egypt and Tunisia are valid case studies, it looks like internet penetration of around 20% is the mark.

Geopolitics & Macroeconomics adds:

Internet penetration: Social networking sites were critical to sustaining the momentum in the recent protests. The internet penetration in Egypt is 16%. In Libya, it is a meagre 5% [1]. The unrest in Libya has thus far remained concentrated in regions that are geographically distant from the seat of ‘real' power (see more on this below). The dependence of momentum on internet communication is far greater in Libya than in Egypt where protests began in Cairo itself.

Taking the conversation to Pakistan, Sabene Saigol writes, on BrandRepublic:

Perhaps one reason for this is that we're still not that used to communicating via the ‘net - maybe we need greater broadband and internet penetration. Personally I think it is more to do with culture - while Pakistani internet users are savvy to using social media to connect with friends, I feel they have not yet ‘crossed over' to seeing SM as a means for professional communications - or even wider social communications that go beyond their immediate circle. Yes, there are no doubt savvy people - both within marketing and tech circles, and outside - however, these people are likely a tiny proportion of the total number of ‘net and social media users.

Apple advertises its products as magical. They’re at the intersection of “technology and the liberal arts,” Steve Jobs said today. Something that moves your heart, not just your lust for technology. Will consumers still buy that in 2011?

The big picture question of the day is whether Apple has done it again. With the original iPad, Apple crushed its rivals, taking more than 90 percent of the tablet market in 2010 and selling more than 15 million units. Jobs predicted today that 2011 will be the year of the iPad 2. Based on what I have seen today, I think he’s mostly, but not entirely, right.

Competitors will discover that Apple has a lot of inherent financial advantages, including being a low-cost leader. That may not sound intuitive, but I believe it has to be true. It is selling so much volume of its products that it can get discounts on parts and manufacturing services that no one else can get.

When it sells its products in stores, it also doesn’t have to give away 20 percent of the margin to a retailer. That is a huge financial advantage. Carriers are also willing to subsidize the costs of Apple products in a way that they won’t with other tablet vendors. All of these things may explain why the Motorola Xoom, a very cool product, is selling for $800 while Apple has priced its new devices at $499 to $829, (and dropped the price of the old iPad to $399). Apple has also left very little room for rivals here, since it has signed up both AT&T and Verizon. Perhaps there is room for rivals to sell $199 machines, but users probably aren’t going to like them.

Those are reasons why any cool Apple mobile product could beat other rivals. But Apple has also done some smart things with the iPad 2. It has created another rev of its microprocessor, the A5, which has two cores, or computing brains. And it has nine times faster graphics than its old A4 chip. Since Apple designs this chip itself, it doesn’t have to give away much margin to a chip design firm. It only has to give a small margin to a chip manufacturer such as Samsung to make the chips.

Apple has also custom-designed the A5 to run Apple applications on a device with a 10-hour battery life. Apple should have an edge there, as it won’t sell the A5 to rivals. But if this is an advantage, it isn’t likely to last long, as Nvidia is being very aggressive with a new quad-core chip that it could sell to any Android rivals.

The design of the iPad 2 is where Apple has more advantages. The iPad 2 will have faster web-browsing with a new version of Safari. It has two cameras that will inspire a lot of video and photo-related apps. The availability of the Mac applications — iMovie, Garage Band, and Photo Booth — on the iPad 2 will make a lot of users happy. More interesting features will come with new releases of the iOS, or Apple’s operating system in the fairly near future.

There are some users who won’t like the restrictions of Apple’s ecosystem. If they want universal serial bus (USB) and SD card ports, they are out of luck. Apple didn’t change the resolution of its screen either, leaving it at 1024 x 768. Competitors could add these options and put emphasis on them as selling points. (Critics are disappointed that Apple did not improve the display, but that’s a big cost issue others have too).

Apple has also made great improvements in the feel of the product. It’s 33 percent thinner, 2 ounces lighter, and it has a wonderful new screen cover that doubles as a stand for the device. (It wakes up the device when you peel it back and it has micro-fibers that clean the screen when the cover is on).

Now here is why Jobs is not entirely right. Apple has come up with a stunning machine at prices that the competitors will have a hard time beating. But it is almost inevitable that Android-based tablets will gain market share on Apple.

So far, I don’t see the Android machine that will beat the iPad 2. But the potential is there, given ingredients such as Android 3.0, Nvidia Tegra 2 chips and other fast microprocessors, and 4G LTE. The latter is the main weakness in Apple’s armor.

LTE is fast, with a minimum speed on Verizon at around 12 megabits a second and actual speeds running much higher than that now. Getting access to 4G LTE is as big a benefit as having access to lots of cool apps, from my point of view. Right now, the timing of the still-young LTE technology means that Apple cannot yet put it into its mass-produced, lowest-cost tablet computers.

If LTE costs come down sometime soon, then Apple can launch a new version of the iPad to incorporate the technology. But it’s not a simple upgrade, as it means that the hardware of the machine — including the radio chip — has to change. And for now, LTE chips are larger than their 3G equivalents, so the heat dissipation and product size are affected. In other words, LTE can force Apple to redesign the iPad.

Apple can do that. But Android tablet makers might be able to move faster than Apple directly into the 4G LTE tablet market. If they do that, then they will have found a scenario where they could steal a march on Apple. Apple is not likely to let that gap last for a long time, but it might be enough for Apple to lose some share this year.

Apple’s leadership position in this market will be hard to beat, but the collective weight and reach of Android rivals could erode it. And here’s a sobering thought: If Apple eventually winds up with only 30 percent of the tablet market, it could still be No. 1, and its place as the largest technology company in the world will not be at risk.

Check out Apple’s overview video on the iPad 2 and Jobs’ comments on technology and the liberal arts below.

It looks like women have caught up with men in numbers in the workplace. For the first time in history, women in the USA now outnumber men in the workforce, and there are now more women in supervisory positions than there are males. The question is whether they will handle the downside of working any better than men.

According to an article by Ella L. J. Edmondson Bell, Ph.D., titled The 21st Century Workplace -- Are Women the New Men?, the economic downturn has hit men harder. They held nearly 80 percent of jobs that have been lost during what is now being called the "mancession." Will women now inherit the stress, pressure, exhaustion, burn out and heart attacks commonly associated with male leaders in business?

Some predict that this new female-dominated workplace will mean a softening of the corporate culture, with more benevolent leaders. Others foresee just the opposite. Ella says many women don't want to be seen as "soft" -- and others simply aren't. No one would call Carly Fiorina, the head of Hewlett Packard from 1999 to 2005, a wilting lily. According to her memoir, Tough Choices, she was sometimes referred to as Chainsaw Carly.

All of this is especially relevant on the entrepreneurial side, since statistics show that women are starting businesses at more than twice the rate of their male counterparts. Some would argue that the growing success rate of women entrepreneurs shows that they are resourceful, and better able to succeed, despite the odds.

While I'm sure we will continue to see progress on the female side, I predict that they will struggle with the same major challenges faced today by men. These include:

  1. Funding your dream. Raising money is hard, whether you are counting on friends, investors, or banks. I rarely see women at angel investment groups, either asking for money, or offering to fund new ventures. Men seem more focused on this one.

  2. Need for increased confidence and mindset skills. Many women and men are paralyzed by perfection, plagued by pessimism, and the need to satisfy others, rather than themselves. We need more women leaders.

  3. Motivation to succeed. Every entrepreneur needs to love what they do, and believe so strongly in their product or service that they can weather the tough times. On this one, it's easy to spot the ones with passion, from either gender.

  4. Manage time and priorities. Women, often more than men, try to do too much. It's hard to balance the continual demands of the business, personal relationships, and home life. Every entrepreneur needs to prioritize the important tasks ahead of urgent tasks.

  5. Never stop learning. After you start your business, the learning really begins. True entrepreneurs look at failures as their best learning experiences. Networking, and using your network is the next most important element of learning.

I don't see any challenges which are so gender specific that they can't be overcome by any entrepreneur. Yet I don't think women should be convinced that the battle for equality is almost over. There is still the question of why there are so few women in high places, and why the average income for women in business is about 68% of men's income.

What I am hoping is that women will not just be the new men, and suffer from the same maladies and limitations. I'll be looking for women to create the "new business culture" that every worker wants -- better role definitions, more effective and productive leadership, and better work-life balance. That would make women entrepreneurs the new women, rather than the new men!

Making Money Ebay

For more than a decade now, PayPal has reigned king of online payments. Just last quarter alone, their revenue was nearly a billion dollars ($971 million according to VentureBeat). It was a good move for eBay to gobble them up years ago, because today, an estimated 40% of the company’s revenue comes from the PayPal unit. In a press release last month, eBay stated that by 2013 they expect PayPal’s annual revenue to be in the ballpark of $6 to 7 billion. Will that still happen now that Visa has entered the playing field?

Visa’s new PayPal-like service
On March 16th, Visa issued this press release about their new service, which will allow Visa debit and credit cardholders to send money to each other. Visa has offered personal payments outside the United States but this is the first time such service will be available domestically.

“Bank customers of participating financial institutions will have the option to select a Visa account as the destination for funds when making a personal payment. By simply entering the recipient's 16-digit Visa account, email address or mobile phone number, consumers can send funds directly from their bank account to a recipient's Visa account.”

The press release didn’t specify an exact date this feature would be rolled out, other than saying it will be “soon.” Two other companies – CashEdge and Fiserv – have partnered with Visa to offer this service.

Is Visa the first formidable opponent for PayPal?
Obviously, this will not be the first or last competitor. A number of similar services have sprung up over the years, without taking root like PayPal has. Google Checkout was supposed to be "the PayPal killer" when it launched in 2006, but that expectation never materialized. So if the Goliath Google can’t beat PayPal, why would Visa have a fighting chance? Here are 3 things to consider:

Customer Base: At the end of last year PayPal reportedly had 94.4 million registered users – no small feat to accomplish and their first-mover advantage surely contributed to that success. Visa, on the other hand, may be new to personal payments here in the U.S. but they already have a massive customer base they can tap: 269 million credit cards and 397 million debit cards, as of September 30, 2010 (Source: Visa).

Processing Costs: Due to their sheer size, one can assume that the credit card processing fees incurred by PayPal must be bargain basement, comparable to a Wal-Mart or McDonald's. Regardless, it’s still a big expense. That’s why when a credit card is selected as the funding source, they direct you to a page to try and persuade you to use a checking account instead (where you will find an eye-catching orange button for it, which some allege is visually confusing). By cutting out the middle man, Visa might have a real advantage here when it comes to costs.

Card Benefits: If you’re like me, you prefer card payments. I love to exploit my cash back credit card rewards whenever I get the chance. Of course you can earn cash back on your credit card when sending PayPal payments, but the 2.9% fee incurred on the other end can be a deterrent (if the recipient doesn’t want to pay the fees, or you don’t want them to). Visa hasn’t stated whether or not these payments will qualify for rewards, but if they do and the fees are lower, that would be attractive to both parties.

Another benefit [some] credit cards offer is top notch customer service and dispute resolution. I admit, it does sound like PayPal’s dispute resolution has improved drastically over the years, but I think many would agree it still won’t hold a candle to the service you get with something like a Chase Sapphire or other Visa Signature card (disclosure: my website markets the Chase Sapphire card). The benefit of dealing directly with your credit card company’s customer service might be considered a selling point.

Conclusion?
It’s too early to tell if Visa’s personal payment feature will be a hit or miss. Both companies have their strengths and weaknesses. PayPal definitely knows their stuff when it comes to online payments, however my PayPal credit card review demonstrates their ineptness in the card arena. It will be interesting to see whether Visa’s idea fizzles or sizzles.

Disclosure: My company's website, CreditCardForum.com, advertises credit cards. Therefore I have direct and/or indirect financial ties to some credit cards. Additionally, a close family member of mine owns a small amount of Visa stock, which I had advised them to buy several months ago.

Jason Fried reveals how he got good at making money. I am not a full-fledged member of the Church of 37signals, but one of my favorite lessons from them is that a business needs to practice how to make money in order to get good at it...it's not something that you just turn on when monetizing mode strikes.

So here's a great way to practice making money: Buy and sell the same thing over and over on Craigslist or eBay. Seriously.

Go buy something on Craigslist or eBay. Find something that's a bit of a commodity, so you know there's always plenty of supply and demand. An iPod is a good test. Buy it, and then immediately resell it. Then buy it again. Each time, try selling it for more than you paid for it. See how far you can push it. See how much profit you can make off 10 transactions.

Start tweaking the headline. Then start fiddling with the product description. Vary the photographs. Take some pictures of the thing for sale; use other photos with other items, or people, in them. Shoot really high-quality shots, and also post crappy ones from your cell-phone camera. Try every variation you can think of.

If you are in the market for the service provider, make use of the ideas beneath with regard to meeting with and employing the correct one.

Interview as well as Discussion

Job Interview Hired by stevenroddy

Most roofers offer totally free consultations. This is particularly essential, since it gives them a chance to evaluate what your homes roof needs, and it provides you with an opportunity to evaluate all of them. As with all businesses, believe in intuition about the individuals you allow upward on your roofing. No matter how great a contractor's reputation or recommendation, he should begin by showing you with a company card. If the service provider occurs searching as well as talking within an unprofessional method, most likely the task he's going to do may also be less than professional. This isn't to express that you ought to anticipate contractors to reach within suits. They will be hiking in your roofing, therefore the majority of is going to be dressed in denim jeans as well as function boots or even sneakers. If the service provider appears to be more interested in speaking upon his cell phone during your roof than he's in analyzing your own roof's needs, that may be an additional sign that he is not really the main one for the job. For your legal protection, be certain that the actual contractor has adequate legal responsibility insurance.

Seven Uyghurs Sentenced to Death

2011-03-23

Critics of the sentences say China has politicized the robberies as acts of terrorism.

A Uyghur man walks past armed Chinese security forces in Urumqi, July 17, 2009.

Chinese authorities in the northwestern region of Xinjiang have ordered the executions of seven ethnic minority Uyghur men convicted of "violent" crimes, official media said on Wednesday.

The death sentences were handed down by the Supreme People's Court in recent days, according to state media in the regional capital, Urumqi.

The men were accused in connection with three separate attacks late last year in the Silk Road city of Kashgar, according to the news website Urumqi Online.

According to another website, the Xinjiang-based Tianshan news site, Aimaiti Tuheti, Yiming Dawuti, and unnamed "others" killed a security guard at a pedestrian mall as part of a failed Aug. 7 robbery attempt.

In a separate incident on Oct. 12, it said, Nuermaimaiti Aobulikasimu and 11 others broke into a house, bound and killed the couple living in it, and took their possessions.

It said the group also broke into the homes of two brothers, robbed them, and killed six people in a Nov. 11 attack in Kashgar.

The report gave no information about the victims or the schedule for the executions.

Three of the men were sentenced to death with a two-year reprieve, a sentence that is normally commuted to life imprisonment in China's judicial system.

They were convicted of deliberate homicide and armed robbery by the Kashgar Intermediate People's Court in the first instance.

'Strike hard' campaign

A Han Chinese resident of Urumqi surnamed Yang said a reference to "terrorism" in official news reports on the case showed that it was being politicized by the authorities, who have launched a series of "strike hard" campaigns in Xinjiang following deadly ethnic violence in July 2009.

"There is an implied political meaning; that they were somehow engaged in separatist activities or ethnic divisions," said Yang.

Exile Uyghur groups said the trials had been conducted behind closed doors, with scant opportunity for public scrutiny.

"The entire process against these men, from the trial through to the judgment, was opaque," said Dilxat Raxit, spokesman for the Munich-based World Uyghur Congress.

"There was also very little reasonable evidence to convict them on a legal basis, because all the evidence came from one side of the case," he said.

"We strongly condemn the Chinese government for continuing to pursue their policies of ethnic division," said Raxit.

"We are also strongly opposed to the death penalty in this case."

Earlier cases

Last month, the Supreme Court sentenced four Uyghurs to death for alleged involvement in an Aug. 19 bomb attack in Xinjiang’s western Aksu city.

The World Uyghur Congress pointed to concerns over lack of transparency in those cases too.

The Aksu blast left eight people dead, including two of the bombers, and 15 wounded after a man riding a three-wheeled vehicle threw explosives at a group of uniformed patrolmen. Four Uyghurs were arrested shortly after the attack.

State media characterized the cases as acts of terrorism and unrelated to longstanding ethnic tensions between Uyghurs and Han Chinese in the region.

Exiled Uyghur dissident Rebiya Kadeer has warned that attacks like those in Aksu will continue to occur until Beijing addresses the underlying source of tension in the region.

Millions of Uyghurs—a distinct, Turkic minority who are predominantly Muslim—populate Central Asia and Xinjiang.

Uyghurs say they have long suffered ethnic discrimination, oppressive religious controls, and continued poverty and joblessness despite China's ambitious plans to develop its vast northwestern frontier.

Those frustrations erupted in July 2009 in deadly riots that left nearly 200 people dead, by the Chinese government's tally.

At least 26 people, mostly Uyghurs, were sentenced to death in the aftermath of the riots, many of whom have been executed, according to state media.

China is believed to execute more people each year than the rest of the world’s countries combined, although the government does not publish official figures.

Rights groups say Beijing may execute as many as several thousand prisoners annually.

Chinese authorities blame Uyghur separatists for a series of deadly attacks in recent years and accuse one group in particular of maintaining ties to the al-Qaeda terrorist network.

New training scheme

China on Wednesday also announced a training scheme which places ethnic minority graduates from Xinjiang in work elsewhere in China.

Governments of the destination cities will spend 450 million yuan (U.S.$ 69 million) for the program, while Xinjiang will spend 400 million yuan (U.S.$ 61 million), the official Xinhua news agency reported.

The program targets some 60,000 jobless college graduates in Xinjiang, around 80 percent of whom are from ethnic minorities, and 60 percent of whom are women.

However, some commentators see the move as an attempt to assimilate non-Han Chinese into mainstream Chinese culture.

"From the point of view of ethnic minorities, the graduate work scheme is really taking the cream of youth from the minorities and using them to 'further cultural development,'" wrote one ethnic minority user on a popular microblogging service.

"In fact, the culture that is being advanced is Han culture, and this group of young people will have been totally brainwashed," the microblog update said.

An Urumqi resident surnamed Li agreed.

"They have run senior high school schemes like this before during the past few years," he said.

"Whether it's high-schoolers or graduate training programs, these are measures that are aimed at thought control and brainwashing, and the 'Partification' of their education," he said.

Whether it were actually uncertain, info obtained by the whistleblower website, Wikileaks, has confirmed Chinese language federal government fears over it's ongoing control of the region it calls Xinjiang, which is also referred to as Eastern Turkestan. Most lighting of Chinese language government pressure are the wires pointing to Chinese frustration, or the specter associated with Chinese language ire, over the discharge of Uyghur detainees in Guantánamo to 3rd nations. A December 29, 2008 cable applies exactly how Chinese Assistant International Minister Liu Jieyi fulfilled with the Ough.Utes. Ambassador in order to The far east to tone of voice Beijing's powerful competitors associated with launch to any kind of country apart from The far east, and that when the Ough.Utes. do certainly accede to this ask for it would "avoid injury to bilateral relationships and also to co-operation ‘in important areas'". Furthermore, a Feb 2009 cable television describes how the Chinese Ambassador in order to Kyrgyzstan, Zhang Yannian, regarded as the actual possible release of Uyghur Guantánamo detainees because "an unfavorable behave towards us" and a "slap in the face". The U.S. government was firm in not really liberating the detainees in order to China illustrates the degree of the politicized character from the Chinese judicial system. Legitimate issues over terrorism tend to be understandable, however in the U.Utes. government's observe the detainees would probably encounter torture as well as execution if they returned in order to The far east

Chinese government stress in regard to the Uyghur Guantánamo detainees wasn't just put on the Ough.Utes. government, but additionally in order to Brand new Zealand and a number of Western government authorities which were considering resettlement. Albania, Germany and Finland, as well as European Union fellow member states all appear to have borne the impact of Chinese federal government disappointment. In the case of Indonesia, that was initially willing to consider 2 Uyghurs on solely relief reasons, Uyghur Guantánamo instances had been less preferable to other detainees because of the negative effects accepting Uyghurs would have upon relations with The far east. The May 8, '09 cable relates how "German Ambassador Michael Schaefer documented which Germany had informed The far east of the Ough.S. ask for to accept some Uighur detainees kept at Guantánamo and had been consequently cautioned by China associated with ‘a heavy load upon bilateral relations' if Indonesia had been to simply accept any detainees".

The actual diplomatic wires also discuss the unrest within Urumchi, the actual local funds, in July '09. The This summer 13, '09 cable discussing bulk incidents within China says:

"Ethnic riots such as those in Xinjiang July 5-7 as well as in Tibet within 03 of 08 vary substantially within origin as well as character from mass incidents, XXXXXXXXXXXX stressed to PolOff [Political Officer] on XXXXXXXXXXXX. Each present severe problems for the actual Party, XXXXXXXXXXXX stated, but the Celebration management would not wait to spread out fireplace on Uighurs or Tibetans if they considered this essential to restore purchase. Mass incidents pose a different type of risk, he explained, since the management is ‘afraid' to fire upon Han rioters with regard to fear of sparking huge open public outrage that will change against the Celebration."

This can be a relaxing viewpoint, especially when one considers the evidence presented by 50 percent reports launched this year through the Uyghur Human Privileges Task (UHRP) as well as Amnesty Worldwide that fine detail eyewitness accounts from the use of lethal live fireplace towards Uyghur protestors in This summer '09. In addition, the actual observation that fire would not be used against Han Chinese protestors has resonances for that various strategy taken by Chinese protection causes within Urumchi in order to Han Chinese direct orders in Sept '09. Throughout individuals direct orders, then Celebration Assistant, Wang Lequan, tackled protesters, who had required that he let them know regarding federal government responses in order to security concerns. A similar request to meet using the Celebration Secretary through Uyghur demonstrators in July was not fulfilled.

The actual broader consequences of the unrest also saw a brief dialogue on the impact it would possess upon Iran-China relations, and on relationships along with Australia following Globe Uyghur Congress Leader, Ms. Rebiya Kadeer, talked in the Nationwide Press Membership in Canberra within August 2009. In the second option case, china government "privately warn[ed] a significant Aussie financial institution that vendors the nation's Push Club to use it's impact to bar a Kadeer speech there".

The United States' issues concerning the situation within the Uyghur region are available via in the cables. In a discussion upon policy path in Tibet, U.S. officials explain that it'll be not possible for Chinese leaders to adopt the softer line "if they appear like doing this below worldwide pressure". The cable television dated April Sixteen, 2008, one month following the outbreak of unrest within Tibetan areas, also relayed the actual declaration "that domestic stability continues to be leadership's main concern above all else, meaning there'll ‘almost surely' be no relaxation of the current difficult line on Tibet or in places like Xinjiang." The info included in the cable television additionally sheds light on the severe sensitivity that china federal government sights territorial ethics, and also the possible spill over associated with unrest through Tibet.

The prospect of solutions to tensions within Tibet and Xinjiang arising from municipal society are discussed inside a Feb Twenty-four, 08 cable television. While recommending that China's economic achievement increases its potential to deal with democratic change, the cable television additionally discusses how Chinese language leaders begin to see the effectiveness of "a limited expansion associated with civil culture, including enhancements in the rule associated with law and a stronger role for authorized beliefs, NGOs, non profit organizations along with other stars in areas which bring about sociable balance and do not problem Communist Celebration rule." This is a notable change in thinking, that has observed Ough.Utes. authorities market the notion that Chinese economic improvement, as well as financial relations with The far east will bring in regards to a steadily democratic culture; nevertheless, more faith seems to be put into a grassroots movement compared to one which starts from the top quantity of a Chinese language federal government. Nevertheless, the actual cable concludes which "[i]n places for example Tibet and Xinjiang, the fear associated with separatism results in tighter limitations about the development of municipal society." This approach can be regarded as counter-productive by the official, who suggests that the U.Utes. government "should still express...serious concerns over Beijing's individual privileges report as well as attract China's growing consciousness that higher respect for human rights, religious independence and the rule of regulation will serve to advertise the improvement as well as social stability that China looks for in addition to to improve China's worldwide image." Such a technique might consider considerable diplomatic abilities thinking about "China's paranoid fear that the Usa privately encourages routine alter and ‘separatists' within Taiwan, Tibet and Xinjiang".

The wires provide understanding of the every day company of diplomacy that is hardly ever owned by the general public, which is fascinating to note the quantity of function carried out behind closed doors upon Uyghur problems. The importance of the role of the United States as a monitor of Uyghur human privileges conditions in private discussions is created obvious, as well as contrasts using its sensible public stance. Employees from the Uyghur Human Rights Project is actually well aware of the pressure the Chinese federal government puts on Uyghur activists; nevertheless, the details associated with Chinese federal government stress on it's counterparts is illustrative of the diploma which Chinese officials attempt to control contrary stories. With more revelations in the future from Wikileaks, issues over Uyghurs may not get the head lines, but the wires possess get rid of new light on the paperwork associated with human privileges conditions within the Uyghur area.

In the case of Germany, which was at first prepared to think about 2 Uyghurs on purely humanitarian grounds, Uyghur Guantánamo instances had been less preferable to other detainees due to the negative effects accepting Uyghurs might have upon relationships with The far east. A Might 8, 2009 cable applies how "German Ambassador Erina Schaefer reported which Germany had knowledgeable China of the Ough.S. ask for to simply accept a few Uighur detainees held from Guantánamo and had been consequently warned by The far east associated with ‘a heavy load upon bilateral relations' if Germany were to simply accept any detainees".

Muslim mainly, the Uyghur people have a deep religious identification which usually, in specific, permitted them to keep a solid big difference in opposition to the Chinese invader. Certainly, the Uyghur Empire of Mongolia knew a excellent civilization, until its absorption by the Mongolian Empire in the XIIIth century.

While in their own history, the Uyghurs successively taken on Shamanism, Manicheism, Buddhism and the Nestorianism before lastly moving to Islam when the Arab conquerors beat the Chinese in year 751 BC., therefore starting the way to the Islamization of the whole Central Asia.

Under the effect of the religions which they taken, Uyghur People used successively, and at times in a competing way, a great number of written forms (turco-runic, brahmi, tokharien, soghdien) before developing their own unique graphic system.

The coming of Islam was a great change mainly because it was accompanied by the absorption of the Uyghur land in the immense Turco-Mongolian and Islamic Kingdom. Thus, the descendants of Genghis Khan slowly replaced their writing by a Arabo-Persan alphabet, still used presently.

If their own writing, their language and their religion mark a real difference with the culture of Chinese Han, the Uyghurs also are different from their aspect, so characteristic of Central Asia's people. A shiny skin, eyes representing a whole pallet of colors, from black to deep blue, features going out to the Mongolian, Turkish or Uzbek origins of these men and these women.

For a few years, China has included the proper identity of these remote people, although they represent only 8 million people - a little for this kind of large area. So, Uyghur people are now part of the fifty six ethnic minority groups having been well-known in an official way by China.

This particular law will allow them a few privileges in a country exactly where their difference is very often repressed. Thus, Uyghur people escape the "single child policy" and their language is accepted as the second official language in Xinjiang.

The integration of the Uyghur people and their culture in China, however, looks very illusory. The presence of all-natural sources in Xinjiang, and its proximity with nations acknowledged as very sensitive, highly urged the government to increase the sinicization of this area. Million of Han thus came to settle in this new Chinese eldorado, monopolizing the higher responsibility jobs.

In reaction to this true will to assimilate the Uyghur people into the Chinese culture, an independent party like East Turkistan Islamic Movement(ETIM) was born in the early 1990.

Saying more freedom, but especially the acceptance of their true identity, this movement was seriously repressed by the power authorities in place Xinjiang Uyghur Autonomous Region.

The situations of September 11, 2001, were the perfect occasion for the Chinese government to justify true reprisals: they declared the "Uyghur freedom fighters" as dangerous terrorists linked to Al Quaida because of their Muslim origins and their proximity with Pakistan and Afghanistan... However, the terrible repression which followed did not calm down the anger. The Uyghur peoples population continues today to proudly hold their identity and their ethnic heritage , even though they become a minority on their own territory.

Making Money System

Amid all the fanfare over new iPad 2 hardware, Apple’s CEO Steve Jobs boasted that the company has now paid out a cumulative $2 billion to developers for apps sold in the App Store. This comes just eight months after it announced developers had made $1 billion from the app store since the store launched in July 2008.

This is a huge number and highlights one of the reasons Apple is doing so well in this post-PC era. It’s not only building devices that embody the intersection of technology and humanities, as Jobs likes to say; it’s also creating an environment for developers to take advantage of these more personal and powerful machines. This vibrant community of programmers has helped push Apple’s count of apps up to more than 350,000.

The Asymco blog recently (and accurately) estimated that Apple had paid out $2 billion to developers over the course of 31 months, compared to the 34 months it took for record labels to make that much money on iTunes. This suggests Apple’s App Store is on a huge growth trajectory and shows why developers are still so loyal to the iOS platform. Even with some restrictions with the App Store, they have a better shot at making money there.

But the $2 billion isn’t just coming from paid downloads. Apple developers are also raking in money from in-app purchases, which have become a major revenue source for devs in the last year. According to Distimo, an app analytics company, revenue from in-app purchases both in free and paid iPhone apps was 49 percent last year, compared to 51 percent of paid download revenue. And that’s not counting any money that developers are getting on their own through advertising efforts.

The point is, Apple’s App Store is still the top destination for developers because it has robust revenue-generating options ensuring it won’t be shoved aside anytime soon. Android’s ascendance will certainly draw developers, but until it becomes easier to make money there, it’s not going to be the priority for most developers. Google, for its part, is improving the money-making potential of Android with an announced in-app purchase system and a new web store front. It’s also looking at expanding carrier billion options and trying to improve app discovery. But for now, Apple has 2 billion reasons why developers should stick with iOS, and that’s a lot more than Google can say. And as more users buy iOS apps, it further locks them in and makes it harder for them to switch platforms.

It’s nearing two weeks since unions and their cohorts on the Left have thrown a nationwide fit over Scott Walker’s solution to what is ailing Wisconsin. Unions and Democrats have made Wisconsin their cause célèbre by deploying OFA astroturf, the big talking heads, as well as recruiting just about every known Grateful Dead concert attendee on their mailing lists into Wisconsin. Meanwhile, Democratic state senators (now humorously known as fleebaggers) comically continue to hold the state hostage over an issue of union power, politics and money—nothing more and nothing less.

Despite unions’ long hatred of Scott Walker, the new governor is moving to address both the symptoms of the disease and the disease itself—the public-sector union scheme that has molested Wisconsin’s taxpayers and their children by gaming the system. Unions like Wisconsin’s teachers’ union [WEAC] (which was Wisconsin’s biggest-spending lobby in 2009) have been extraordinarily adept at fixing the system through spending millions to elect politicians who, in turn, reward the unions at the expense of the taxpayers.

Now, in response to Walker’s proposals, the Left has gone overboard in their attempt to protect their stranglehold on Wisconsin taxpayers. Even though unions have made clear that their fight is not about their wages or benefits (they’ve offered concessions), they’ve made the fight all about their “right to be unionized” and the fictitious right to “collective bargaining”—which makes their cause even more despotic.

In making Madison into something reminiscent of the spectacle of the 1960s, unions, Democrats and their liberal cohorts are attempting to make the Wisconsin union battle into a civil rights battle, when it is not.  In fact, the Wisconsin fight, when compared to private-sector negotiations is about: 1) the Scope of Bargaining, 2) Union “Income” Security [Right-to-Work vs. Forced Dues], 3) whether Wisconsin should be the unions’ dues collection agency [payroll deduction of dues], and 4) whether public-sector unions should be ‘recertified’ by holding elections every year.

Contrary to the Left’s hyperbole, Scott Walker’s proposals do nothing to eliminate public-sector workers’ right to association, assemblage, or to petition their government. Even pretending that it is a “rights” issue is a mistake. There is nothing in the U.S. Constitution that requires a government to engage in a back and forth negotiation with a collective of workers. In a poignant piece entitled There is No Right to Collective Bargaining, Public Service Research Foundation President David Denholm summarizes the problem with the unions’ argument, stating:

A law granting public-sector unions monopoly bargaining privileges gives a union, a special interest group, two bites at the apple. First, it uses its political clout to elect public officials. Then it negotiates with the very same officials.

When you consider that between 70 and 80 percent of all local government expenditures are personnel costs, you begin to get an idea of the magnitude of the power such laws give unions.

Not only is there no right to collective bargaining in public employment, it is wrong. Collective bargaining distorts and corrupts democratic government.

Collective bargaining is a process for employer-employee relations that was designed for the private sector. This process served as the model for the development of public-sector collective bargaining without taking into account the fundamental differences between the two sectors.

As Mississippi Governor Haley Barbour explains:

“When they have collective bargaining in Wisconsin, on one side of the table there’s state employee unions or the local employee unions. On the other side of the table are politicians that they paid for the election of those politicians,” Barbour said. “Now, who represents the taxpayers in that negotiation? Well, actually, nobody.”

Even Newsweek’s Evan Thomas noted on Sunday [via Newsbusters]:

The Democrats really depend on these public employee unions in a lot of states for their support and for their political muscle, and public employee unions got a problem here. I want to distinguish between unions and public employee unions. Unions obviously are critical, but in the public sector, public employee unions have a pretty easy time getting a lot of benefits because nobody’s really pushing back all that hard.

Admittedly, Walker’s proposals are a threat to unions in several ways. As Walker’s proposals determine:

  1. The extent of what unions will be allowed to bargain about. Walker’s proposal limits bargaining to wages only, effectively eliminating the WEA Trust monopoly which gets its money from local school boards and runs it through a union-run insurance company.

  2. Whether unions can have workers fired for not paying union dues. According to its most recent financial record on file, WEAC (the teachers’ union) raked in over $25 million in 2009. Walker’s proposal makes paying union dues voluntary, as opposed to mandatory. This goes to the lifeblood of any union. If, for example, 20% of those teachers who are currently required to pay union dues as a condition of employment opt out, WEAC could lose up to $5 million a year in revenue. [It is noteworthy that, in the private-sector, the SEIU will be conducting its second strike at a Pennsylvania medical center over the issue of mandatory dues.]

  3. Whether the state will continue being the unions’ dues collector. Walker’s proposal eliminates’ the employers’ payroll deduction of union dues. Again, while it is commonplace for unions to negotiate payroll deduction, there is nothing anywhere (in private or public sector law) that states that it is an employers’ duty to be a union’s collection agency.

  4. Whether the unions will have to ‘re-certify’ every year to maintain representational status. Of all of Walker’s proposals, this seems to be one that could be considered a ‘throw away’ item in negotiations. If Walker’s other proposals get enacted, and union-represented employees feel that the union is worthless, they can initiate an election themselves every calendar under existing law [see Section 111.83(5)[h]] .

Given the ability of the unions and their co-conspirators on the Left to hijack the issue in Wisconsin over these last two weeks, there appears no way for a “win-win” compromise to be worked out. One side or the other will win. Either the unions and the Left, or taxpayers will prevail.

If the Left wins, all chances of reforming public-sector unions will be tossed aside by weak-kneed Republicans who will then be held hostage by temper-tantrum throwing Democrats (see Indiana for example). In addition, the Left has already painted the entire Republicans party with bulls eyes and has for years. Therefore, there is no reason for GOP governors like Scott Walker, Chris Christie and John Kasich to back down, which puts the Left in an untenable situation as well.

In the meantime, the disciples of Saul Alinsky will continue their prattle, attempting to convince America that the Battle of Wisconsin is something more than a fight over union power, politics and money…even though it’s not.
