Making Internet Money

So, why did this particular ad hit a nerve with the online audience, and what was Target really going for?

I think that the internet DIY set reacted to making fun of a costume that fits their ethos perfectly. Last halloween, for example, one DIY dad became a YouTube hit when he posted an awesome homemade Iron Man costume he made for his kid. Is Target's message really that the kid would have been better off wearing a storebought version? If so, citizens of the internet (and makers in particular) are right to be a little ticked off.

As for the non-DIYers, I think that what made them upset was the way Target tried to manipulate kids by playing the dual role of the bully who makes fun of your costume and the cool parent who just wants to help you fit in, unlike your weird, lame, Iron-Man-suit-building mom.

That doesn't work, though, because the parents who will be paying for the costumes are the ones who teach their kids that bullying and peer pressure are wrong, and that creativity is good. The bigger, more popular kid who mocks your costume is the bad guy in every cartoon and after-school special. Why would any kid root for him? And why would parents root against their own nostalgia for (sometimes embarrassing) homemade Halloween outfits? (And if this ad was made to be seen by kids, it sure was shot poorly.)

That leads me to a distasteful theory about who Target was, well, targeting with this commercial. It's not aimed at internet geeks with the time, money and technical skills to make amazing Iron Man costumes for their kids. They aren't going to go to Target for a costume anyway. It's aimed at parents who don't have that time, money or expertise, and who don't want their kids to be singled out as weird or poor. Did Target pick a black family for the ad because they think African-American parents fit that profile? That would be the grossest type of marketing, but I think it's possible.

It doesn't matter if you can't make (or afford to make) your kid a costume, though: the ad still fails because the homemade costume it shows is cool. That mom did a great job with it, and clearly put in some time and effort, so there's nothing for her kid to be embarrassed about. If Target wanted to invoke shame and peer-pressure to make parents feel self-conscious about their income or costume-making skills, they should have at least shown a costume that was actually bad.

Hulu Plus is paid version of the popular TV and movie streaming service Hulu, which initially arrived in June of this year as an iPhone, iPad and iPod Touch application. Subscribers pay $9.99 for access to full seasons of TV shows on Hulu, instead of the the handful of episodes the free version offers.

The premium service also supports some Internet-enabled TVs and Blu-Ray players, media center boxes like Roku, as well as gaming consoles like the Xbox 360 and the PS3, as noted above. Support for Sony BRAVIA 2010 TVs was just announced today, too.

The blog post mentions Hulu Plus's expanding lineup of shows, including the addition of fall TV shows like The Event, Raising Hope and No Ordinary Family. Hulu is also delivering the back episodes of dramas like Monk, Psych and Battlestar Galatica, it says.

That said, industry insiders know Hulu has its struggles - it still doesn't offer CBS or CW content, for example, and in March, Viacom pulled two of Hulu's most popular offerings - The Daily Show With Jon Stewart and The Colbert Report - after it realized these money makers should be making it money, not Hulu.

Worth Cutting Cable For?

However, for those looking to cut out their cable bills, $9.99/month isn't too bad, as long as you're not concerned with having all that cable TV has to offer. A combination of a digital converter box for capturing over-the-air transmissions of DTV signals and Hulu Plus may be "good enough" for penny-pinchers, though.

On a personal note, as someone who just spent well over a hundred dollars buying back episodes of Battlestar Galatica on iTunes prior to Hulu Plus's launch (ouch!), this service would have been a welcome, much more affordable way to watch an entire show from episode one. My timing was awful. And if that's the sort of TV-viewing you're up for too, Hulu Plus is worth consideration.

If, however, $9.99/month still seems too high, then wait - it could still change. Hulu Plus represents one of the first major experiments in alternatives to cable TV (Netflix streaming being another, of course.) It's fair to say the company is testing the waters and adjusting to meet demand - or lack thereof. Finding the pricing "sweet spot" is undoubtedly of the utmost importance to Hulu.

1. Clip coupons and use them!  Make sure you stick to coupons for items you typically buy. Otherwise you’re just spending money to save on something that may go to waste.

2. Use your local bank’s ATM for cash withdrawals.  Many banks will charge extra fees if you use an ATM that is not their own. These fees add up over time! Try to plan your withdrawals when you’re near your own bank’s ATM and save!

3. Sell on eBay or other auction sites.  Not only can you make some extra cash, but you can declutter your home as well! Some people enjoy selling on eBay so much, they make that their living—hunting for great deals, then delivering them to consumers worldwide via the Internet.

4. Hold a garage sale.  Like eBay, this will allow you to declutter and make some cash. Some items are easier to sell on the local level, such as furniture, clothing, heavier items that would cost a lot to ship, etc.

5. Review your credit card finance rates.  Some cards have very high interest rates, over 20%. This costs you a good amount of money from each payment you make to your creditor. Shop around; there are many deals that offer 0% interest offers on balance transfers, and lower monthly rates for those who submit payments regularly and on time.

6. Are you crafty?  Sell your items at a craft fair, bazaar or online! Nothing says “unique” better than a handcrafted original. Whether you crochet, make jewelry, paint or sew, there is an audience out there who will appreciate your items and want to buy them. A new website “Etsy” is like eBay, but offers free stores to crafters, and they only sell homemade items through their site. Visit them at www.etsy.com.

7. Recycle your used soda cans and bottles.  Most supermarkets (in participating locations) offer recycling centers for plastic & aluminum containers. It doesn’t take long to bring a few bags with you during your next shopping excursion, and then process them to see how much money you’ve earned. You’ll be helping the environment and your bottom line when you go to pay the bill.

8. Take advantage of rebates!  When making purchases, especially on electronics or appliances, be sure to ask if there are any rebates available. Sometimes you can even get the full amount of your purchase back. It takes a little time, organization and patience, but the value is well worth it!

9. Review your utilities & other bills.  Often we are paying for services that we don’t need. For example, why pay a high cable TV bill if you hardly watch television? Or why run up the electric bill by having lights on all over the house, or running the A/C when it’s cooler in the evenings? Some companies offer discounts if you sign up for term contracts or incentive programs. Many offer guides to help you learn how to be more cost effective with your use… just look on their website or call customer service for details.

10. Identify your strengths and turn them into money!  Perhaps you love children and have some spare time to baby-sit? Or maybe you like calligraphy and could offer your services to do invitations for special events? Do you enjoy cleaning? There are many busy people who don’t have time to maintain their homes & offices, and would love to have someone reliable to turn to. The opportunities are limitless… you just have to identify them.
